| So, anyone have any ideas on training or survival on the island?

| Assuming a colonization of Henderson Island, our transportation should also be part of our colonization equipment. Think of it like landing on the moon. Your ship is also your shelter. This would very much be the case when first arriving. The island is bare. It is terra nullius. There is no fresh water, there is no shelter and both of these things are required for survival.
Fact: Water is heavy. -We won't be bringing water. We should master reliable high quantity sea water desalinization and sterilization for our drinking water. -Does the ship have a galley or kitchen? We will need to bring along a large quantity of beans, peanuts, nuts and other dry/low-weight-to-high-nutrition foods as space will be at a premium. A dried meat/fruit is fine too, but relatively pricey.
Fact: We're not going to summon this entire effort out of whole cloth. -We're going to need a 'base' on the mainland of the United States. We have to train ourselves to work together, to rapidly put together the structures necessary for colonization, and separate the weak from the strong and the determined from the cowards.
Idea: We may end up living half the time or 2/3rds of the time on the island, and part of the time at the base making preparations and growing food to send, etc. Keep in mind we will not be able to produce cement for mortar or mine for ore for metals on the island, so purchasing some raw materials and electronics will be necessary. This doesn't necessarily have to be from the USA: south america, new zealand, tahiti, and other islands may end up being superior alternatives. The USA has one advantage in that most of the interest will be coming from that country, and it's hard to immigrate to other countries. Virtually impossible to do without qualifications or higher education or military service, etc. So like it or not, that's probably going to be where our temporary base of power is.
Idea: We bring along light weight, highly compact pillow dome kits for making shelters and greenhouses on the island. We won't be foraging on the scrub / poison fruit island for our sustainance. Everything we eat will probably be grown/raised by us or brought by us. Dome greenhouses are strong, don't require much of a foundation, and well insulated. We can experiment at the base with the idea of aquaponics: raising food fish and hydroponic crop plants in harmony. The idea is you raise worms in compost, feed that to the fish, eat the fish when they get big, and use the fish waste to fertilize the water for the hydroponic plants, saving on chemicals and such. The large volume of water inside the greenhouse holds thermal energy in its mass, and helps to keep a steady temperature not only day and night, but year round.
Idea: We don't want to be using up precious diesel fuel inefficiently producing our drinking water forever. That's temporary at best. We want to move to solar thermal concentration for: energy production, water purification, heating/cooking/etc, and much more. The principle is that you aim a bunch of mirrors at a pipe filled with oil, which then flows through a boiler for water at many hundreds of degrees, bringing the water to a boil, while the cooled oil goes back up to get heated again. Meanwhile, the sea water is boiled off into steam, turning a turbine and producing electricity. This can also be used to make a communal kitchen for cooking, piped through radiators (probably unnecessary on a tropical island), into saunas, greenhouses, whatever, and then back into the boiler for reheating. Else, it's let off into a condenser or cooling tower to condense back into pure distilled water perfectly safe to drink. No bacteria, no pollution.

| I say we do this stuff jurassic park TLW style.We send a team of lightly armed recon /b/tards to the island,and have them map out areas suitalble for settlement,and have them set up a small camp for a while while we gather up the supplies to send a settlement team composed of 50 4chan users.including me. | |

| Considering we're on a relatively small island in the the middle of the ocean, I think that the sun and wind are perhaps our best bet for producing electricity. The aquaponics idea is also intriguing.

| That certainly looks like quite an efficient system, particularly in that it covers pretty much all domestic needs. The use of the water in an integrated radiator seems pretty clever too. Grey water can then also be used for irrigation, right? (inexperienced with this stuff, but learning.) | |

Yes, it can be used for irrigation, or emptied into the aquaponics for greenhouse nutrients. Though black water from toilets has to be composted before it can be used by plants, else just buried/leached out. | |
